These pools were typically shallow, rectangular-shaped pools, filled with water from nearby rivers or springs. also used their swimming pools for recreational purposes. People would gather around the pool and socialize or engage in various activities.
Ancient Romans
The ancient Romans were another early culture to develop swimming pools. Although the pools weren’t as large or elaborate as the Greek ones, they still served similar purposes, such as bathing, swimming, and exercise. Roman pools were typically filled with water from nearby rivers or baths, and were often decorated with columns, mosaics, and statues. Roman pools were also used for religious ceremonies.
The construction of the first heated pool is credited to a wealthy Roman patron of the arts, Gaius Maecenas in the 1st century B.C. From then on, the heated pool became a steady feature of all major cities around the Roman Empire.
Oldest known pool
However, 20th-century archeological exploration found evidence of the existence of man-made pools in places other than Ancient Greece and Rome. In fact, at an archeological site of Mohenjo-daro in Pakistan, the Harappan Civilization built a Great Bath as early as the 3rd millennium BC. It was an intricately built pool from brick, covered in a thick coating of bitumen to make it watertight.
How have swimming pools changed?
Many indoor pools were made in Victorian Britain the first part of the 19th century. They were soon followed by the formation of numerous swimming clubs around the country, which further popularized this fun, healthy, and beneficial sport.
