How do you entertain kids in a pool?
Taking your children to a public pool is a fantastic way to keep them occupied and entertained during hot summer days. They can socialize with their peers and take part in fun games. There are, however, certain challenges when it comes to safety and pool etiquette. That’s why we’ve put together a few ideas for your kids to have fun, stay safe, and respect the rules.
1. Classic water games
You can engage your kids in old-school water games. Marco Polo is a fun game in which one player is “Marco” who closes their eyes and tries to tag other participants by calling out “Marco” and the others should respond with “Polo”.
Another entertaining game is Shark and Minnows. One child is a shark and their initial position is in the middle of the pool while the other children are minnows and wait at the end of the pool. When the shark gives the signal, the minnows start swimming. Their goal is to reach the other side of the pool without being caught. If a minnow is tagged, they become the shark.
2. Pool amenities
If your kids aren’t good swimmers or don’t have enough space to play games, they can still have fun on diving boards or slides. There may be an inflatable obstacle course that offers a tremendous opportunity to have a blast while testing balance, coordination, and strength.
3. Toys
If rules allow it, your kids can play with water squirts and guns. Small and light inflatable toys are also exciting to play with in the water. For good swimmers, diving rings and sticks offer amazing practice as children need to retrieve them from the pool.
4. Group activities
Relay races in which children swim across the pool and back are a great group activity for good swimmers. You can make the race more challenging if children swim with a pool noodle or pass a beach ball.
Synchronized swimming can be a fun way in which kids learn to cooperate and practice their swimming skills. You can ask them to come up with a group routine, practice it, and then perform it.
Safety tips while having fun:
Water games are fun, but kids can easily get carried away and expose themselves and others to danger. That’s why you need to:
- Supervise them all the time.
- Ensure they understand proper pool behavior and rules and respect others and their needs.
- Make sure they stay hydrated and take regular breaks.
